President Elect Donald Trump campaigned he would “cancel billions in global warming payments to the United Nations.” Obama gave the United Nations’ Green Climate Fund $500 million and pledged an additional $3 billion.
Trump said, “We’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars. We don’t even know who’s doing what with the money. That money that could be better spent at home in support of “America’s vital environmental infrastructure and natural resources.”
“We’re gonna work on our own environment,” he continued. “That includes repairing the Herbert Hoover Dike in Lake Okeechobee, protecting the Florida Everglades.”
No matter what your feelings on anthropogenic global warming are, the United Nations clearly isn’t going to do anything to solve the problem. In fact, most of the U.N.’s global warming activities are mainly globalized redistribution from developed economies to developing economies, with profoundly flawed oversight.
Even if Al Gore is 100 percent right and that hockey stick of death is going to have us doing the butterfly stroke among the polar bears in another five years, the United Nations couldn’t help us if they tried.
In fact, the much-ballyhooed Paris Agreement signed earlier this year, has only voluntary caps on greenhouse emissions and still classifies China — the world’s largest greenhouse gas producer — as a “developing nation.”
Instead of flushing billions of dollars down the toilet on feel-good internationalism that has little effect in practice, Trump wants to spend that money-making America a better, cleaner country. What do you think, do you agree Trump should cancel UN payments?
